a poisoned apple a day keeps the beauties away:
Congratulations, you are the Evil Queen! Your beauty is the most important thing in all of the world, it seems. Maybe you ought to dust off your mirror and get a look at the real you. You're quite the evil woman. You would have some innocent girl's heart cut out just because she is prettier than you? Maybe it is just me, but that sounds a trifle silly. Maybe you should get over yourself and start focusing on running your country.
Take the Disney Villain Test Now!!

[by way of herself, kinda]

addendum: speaking of evil—and we're talking the froo-its of the dev-eel here, folks—anyone want to hold a competition for the meanest thing they've ever done? and for readibility's sake, there should probably be some element of humor in the tale. i'll get the ball rolling in the comments...

6.27.2002

so what if i'm a stuck up bitch? do you have a band named after your Willy Wonka character?
I am the most annoying of all Wonka characters. I am so greedy, snobby; basically just a stuck-up rich bitch. Everyone hates me! I am Veruca Salt. You most often are found saying "I want it now!"

My fate: I fall down the educated eggdicator, where I am possibly "sizzled like sausage."
Which Willy Wonka character are you?

hot stuff: just got back from a 21 min run, my first run out of door since the race. i didn't go very far or very fast, but at least i let that virginia heat that i wasn't going to live in fear of its 88° temps (feels like 94°) anymore.

wow do i need a shower!
making my wish list six months early: i so want one of these...it should be able to fit into my stocking without too much trouble, right? ;)
"no way." for our Tuesday Night Movie Club (the summer vacation version of our Very Special Buffy Dinner) last night we rented Lantana, a tight Australian thriller. The Mister was soon to point out that Anthony LaPaglia —one of the main characters—was Mike Myers' cop friend in

So I Married an Axe Murderer, circa 1993.

despite the time lapse, i had a hard time grasping the fact that a person could go from this to this in nine years. cruising imdb.com, i was shocked to discover that LaPaglia (apparently pronounced La Pah-lia) is actually Australian! i wonder if it's easier for a Brit/Aussie to do an American accent than the other way around. after all, Rachel Griffiths does a pretty damn good job herself.

international house of lords and ladies of leisure: The Mister and i have plans to outfit ourselves today with one of the most necessary items for international travel: the passport. of course all i can think about is whether or not i'm going to be happy about repeatedly showing my picture to customs agents and the possibility of their mocking me/it in a foreign language.

then again, i'll probably be too jet-lagged and excited to see my man at that point to really care about anything more than getting a café au lait/cappuccino and catching a cab to my long-awaited destination.

6.23.2002

good-bye Double Meat Palace, hello Sunnydale High! yeah, advertisers pulled their money out of BVS because they didn't appreciate the show making fun of fast food and not because the whole concept sucked in a big, super-sized way. wouldn't a girl like buffy rather punch the clock slinging pocket-tees in an air conditioned mall? even temping is more tempting than working in a grease pit. bleh.
pushing corporate sponsorship to the point of absurdity: looking for a change of pace for weekend activities, The Mister and i thought we might check out our "home town" arena football team, the Norfolk Nighthawks.

now, for those of you who have never been to an arena football game, the game is played on a field only 50 yards long and probably half as wide as a regular field. there is a foam wall running along the perimeter of the field which seemed to be the boundary, although i swear i saw guys catch balls off of the wall and continue the play. there are two big nets at either end where the goal posts would be, with a much smaller net stretched between them. in order to score a field goal or PAT, the ball must be kicked between the two large nets.

being that J. is a bit of a football snob (having played division I for two years before blowing out his knee for the second time) and the fact that i couldn't have cared less about the game, we left at the half.

when we weren't talking about where the players went to college, how much we thought they were getting paid, and trying to imagine what their motivation was to play in the AF2 league (even less prestigious than the already-tepid AF league), we were remarking on the quality of the announcing (hearing "make. some. NOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISE!" every five minutes gave me a headache pretty damn quick) or the comical fact that every play of the game was sponsored by some business or other.

a fried chicken place had the kick offs, a ford dealership had first downs, and a local bank had QB sacks. we were really hoping for a safety or two-point conversion just to see what lame companies got stuck with those plays.

while we were glad to have had the experience, we saw no reason to repeat it in the future.
DREAMLOG: i think i was on a high school field trip in paris (because my high school were always taking us to foreign countries for field trips...</sarcasm>) and Rob Lowe was along for the ride. i think he had the hots for me, but i was more concerned about the height difference.

and i don't even watch The West Wing!

i'm such a sucker for procrastination it's mindboggling

[via usr/bin/girl]
things i keep forgetting to tell you guys:
  • The Mister and i saw The Bourne Identity last weekend. i rather enjoyed it, although i would have rather seen a little more schmeckin' between Mr. Damon and Miss Potente. speaking of whom, i had to suppress a giggle when Franka, aka Lola, first appeared on the scene and J. turned to me and said "Now I see," as in "Now I understand why you wanted to see this movie and not Sum of all Fears like I wanted, because that chick with the pink hair from Run Lola Run is in this movie."

  • i'm taking a polaroid transfer class, and actually have been for several weeks now. we're learning wet and dry image transfer, emulsion transfer, and SX-70 manipulation techniques. the process is somewhat complicated, but it involves projecting slides onto the film using a special enlarger-type-thing and then maniuplating the film from there. my pieces aren't 100% original work since i've been working with a few shots [that actually came out] from our wedding pics. unfortunately, white doesn't come out so well when using image transfer, but i've got a kick@$$ SX-70 shot that i would put up here if i ever get around to getting a scanner...

  • an old childhood friend—who, before the wedding, i hadn't seen in over five years—also dreamt a week or so ago that i was pregnant. don't worry—there won't be any bouncing baby brigitas any time soon. no, mom, i'm quite sure about that. :)

  • i made the bestest dessert ever for a dinner party last weekend: sprinkle yellow cake mix over cherry pie filling that's in a glass baking dish. drizzle melted butter over the topping and then bake at 350° until brown. as i told kris, it's so frickin' good, it even makes the fancy folks gush.
i think that gets us all caught up now...

6.19.2002

why it pays to read the fine print (even if it is after the fact):

we got some documentation from our insurance company today saying that we would be paying $130 less per billing cycle on our automobile insurance. well, being the curious george that i am, i called to see what that credit was all about.

turns out they were charging The Mister an inexperienced driver fee because, according to their records, they thought that he had gotten his drivers license in June of 2000. i quickly set them straight and let them know that he had actually renewed his license on that date and has been driving since it was legally possible for him to do so.

the customer service guy was as helpful as he could be under the circumstances, but there hasn't been any sort of resolution as yet since he has to pass the matter off to a manager. no worries—i've never had a problem with this company and don't doubt that we'll have a nice credit to put towards our account within a week.
rats: doing a quick search for Trish for yoga studios around seattle, i stumbled up on the Sadhana Yoga Studio, a private studio set in a Japanese garden. being that they're located roughly in the area i'll be staying in when i go to visit, i got pretty excited at the prospect of taking classes while i'm out there...until i saw that they're going to be closed for the whole month of august. poo.
by popular demand: ok, so it was only my friend NPR Erin that suggested i post the following, but here's the original version of the article i had submitted to PFW that was summarily slashed to a measely 280 words. critcism is welcome, but please be kind...

Free Speech at any Cost

In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, there was much talk in both the press and meeting places across the country about not only the future protection of our country but the protection of our personal liberties as well. We Americans are deeply proud to live in “the land of the free” and rightfully so. Millions of men and women through the years have given their lives to defend and protect this country, and without their effort and sacrifice, we wouldn’t have the fortune to live in a country built on the principles of inalienable rights for all people.

While our founding fathers did their very best to draft documents that would stand the test of time, there is no way that they would have been able to look two and a quarter centuries into the future and conceive of the society that exists today. The transmission of information is now measured in milliseconds versus days, and making one’s voice heard is much easier than shouting at passers-by in the town square.

Now the Internet is the world’s town square, and individuals with something to say must find a way for their voice to rise above the din of the billion-odd other people with access to the World Wide Web. Depth of thought and outstanding writing will attract a good number of readers, but nothing catches the attention of people like scandal, tragedy, and sensationalism.

There are many electronic train wrecks on the ‘net today, seducing surfers to stop and look at images both titillating and horrifying. Sex and violence is as much of a draw for websites as it is for movies, and many webmasters enjoy seeing how far they are able to push the envelope in either—or both—directions.

******.com certainly falls into this category as its home page is littered with horrifying accounts of people plumbing the depths of humanity, as well as graphic porn and gore. The site’s latest sadistic gem is the Danie| Pear| execution video. The Wall Street Journal reporter was kidnapped and brutally murdered this past February in Pakistan.

Considering ******’s content, they could not possibly claim to be posting the video in order to show the American public what we are up against, a position argued by The New Republic in an article entitled “The Face of Evil.” The events of 9/11 made it crystal clear what these terrorists are capable of. ****** is simply pandering to the lowest possible [un]common denominator—those warped people masquerading as human beings who get pleasure out of the pain, torture, and death of others.

Against the repeated demands by the federal government and requests from the Pearl family, ****** continues to leave the video on its server, proudly waving its first amendment flag with one hand and calling the ACLU with the other.

Freedom of speech is an integral component of a successful democracy, but at what cost? Between the legitimate news sources on the Internet and 24-hour cable news networks, the American public is keenly aware of what is going on in this new world of ours and what our government is doing about it. We know that Danie| Pear| was brutally murdered by those who hate the United States and all that it represents; there is nothing to be gained from web casting the final moments of his life.

Is an increase in hits really worth the consequences, whether they be legal or karmic? One can only assume that those which traffic in the documentation of pain and suffering would be themselves too numb to imagine how it would feel for the horrifying shoe to be on the other foot.
train of thought: so i was reading the metafilter thread on Blogathon—a 24 blogging effort for charity—initially thinking i'd participate seeing as that it's the first weekend The Mister will be out on the Big Trip, but then realized that (1) my posts would be too depressing and filled with self-pity for words, and (2) that what would i possibly have to say that would be of any interest to people if i hadn't done more than make breakfast and check the mail that day?

so i'm reading and scrolling when i come across this hilarious exchange (read from the top for the full comic effect). some folks of the MeFi old school (ie those with low user ID numbers) complain that the love/thrill/whathaveyou is gone, but little moments like this prove to me that all is far from lost.

6.18.2002

Trish is in da bloghouse!
wooHOO! my brother-in-law got the job at EMP! he'll be working as the assistant manager for both the restaurant and bar. and hey, what are a few dozen drinks between family? ;)
i'm so bad... a telemarketer just called and i really didn't feel like dealing so i just put the phone down and let her do her thing. i know that's not very Xian of me and will do nothing to ensure that my name is taken off of the offending company's call list, but i just wasn't having it, you know?

too much friggin work to do today and the PFW powers that be have asked me to write up ogr!sh dot com (no link as there's nothing remotely redeeming about the site). i guess it's timely because they have the Dan!el Pe@rl executi0n video available on the site, but there's no way i'm going to be able to spin the article without pointing an accusatory finger right back at them. my critique of such sensationalism was all the more fired up by the fact that i was asked to write on this site...bleh.

worst. luck. EVER: my sister and her husband got into yet another car accident this weekend. the good news is that their brand new car didn't get totalled just weeks before their wedding (and they're both ok), the bad news is that some drunk almoist ran the both of them off of the road, taking off their driver's side mirror in the process.

yeesh.
FINAL ISSUE! i doubt that long-awaited relief is the feeling that magazines are trying to convey with this bold declararation. J. and i have been waiting for this day ever since he got suckered by one of those door-to-door magazine sales people. and if that particular con-person happens to be reading this—with the exception of glossy advertisements and those annoying subscription inserts, U.S. News has nothing in common with The Economist.
DREAMLOG: i'm pretty sure i was pregnant, despite all pharmaceutical efforts to the contrary. it may have also been someone else's, even though that would be physically impossible, if you get my drift...

i alst had a dream over the weekend that i took a[n outdoor] yoga class for college credit. basically it was a bunch of really really flexible people (myself not included) that were sitting around on mats discussing the spirtual principles of the practice and basically running their respective yaps just to hear themselves use big words.

not that i've ever been guilty of that, meself...

6.13.2002

DREAMLOG: i dreamt that i had met up with or run into a bunch of people from 9th grade. i think we were on some weird boat cruise that wound up in some wooded lake and we had to collect supplies for a youngish lesbian hermit who used tanning beds a lot. anyhow, the people from 9th grade and i were getting all caught up and i remember feeling very full of myself when i told them that i was married.

pretty lame, i know, but in other news, The Mister is set to return in three hours—a whole day early!

6.12.2002

because what this world needs is another freak show: word on the street has it that Fergie is getting her own talk show. while this is the next logical career step for an ex-Royal Weight Watchers spokesperson, the thing that caught my eye was a comment made by the president of the company slated to produce the show:
Universal Television Enterprises president Steve Rosenberg described the Duchess as "the person next door whose inspirational stories of survival make her so incredibly appealing to viewers and stations."
Fergie as the [girl] next door? i guess that's possible...i mean the guy that lives next to us is a bit of a queen.

thanks, folks, i'll be here all week!
at a point, it's not "only money"... the poster arrived today and was at the framery (?) within minutes (it's just down the block and i had a hankering for an iced coffee). after much debate as i always have at those places, i settled on a sharp-looking and substantial frame with a brushed pewter look to it.

fortunatelyi had the presence of mind to bring along along of those 20% off Val Pak coupons because the cost of framing was several times that of the print itself. the woman made me feel a little bit better when said how surprised she was that i didn't pay closer to $600 for the print, but i had to look away from the bill when i saw the four and knew that two more numbers were to follow...and that was after the discount! thank god i decided to forgo the matting—i might have had mortgage the dog!

but what the hell—we love the pic and he will be turning the big three-oh... i'll try not to think about that the total cost of the gift will be considerably more than my flight to seattle, and possibly as much as a flight to see him overseas! oh right—i'm not thinking about that...

addendum: i hope he was being honest when he said he never reads my site... ;)
fortune may favor the bold, but not so much the overly excitable. turns out that there are some good bands playing at bumbershoot this labor day weekend (from the Morning Faithful mailing list):
Performers include: Sonic Youth, Ani DiFranco, Wyclef Jean, Death Cab For Cutie, Blonde Redhead, Kristin Hersh, Maceo Parker, Modest Mouse, Blackalicious, Dear John Letters, Concrete Blonde, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Buddy & Julie Miller, The Mekons, The Itals, Richard Thompson, Jenny Toomey, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Kelly Willis, The Gourds, Michelle Shocked, Chico Hamilton & Euphoria, Dave Edmunds, The Derailers, El Vez, Otis Taylor, John Wesley Harding, Beachwood Sparks, Jon Dee Graham.
i could just kick myself for relying on the line-up at the bumbershoot website (which continues to crash my computer so i'll spare you the link). :::sigh:::

in other Morning Faithful news, our favorite DJ received some well-deserved praise in the local paper. congrats, john!
singing the alphabet song with brigita: courtesy of miss tara d:

A - Animals/Pets: Cleo the two-and a half year old Boston Terrier-Terror. she really puts the beeyotch into bitch.

B - Best Friend: this is where I say The Mister, right? which is an honest and yet lame answer. best GF is also a toughie—in town would have to be NPR Erin, out of town is anyone’s guess, and by blood would be a tie between my mom and my sis.

C - Cohabitants: just Cleo and The Mister since Modesto the Mouse II was successfully evicted last winter.

D - Desire(s): to figure out what it is in life that i love to do and then devise a way to get paid [handsomely] for it. also to live happily ever after with the love of my life on a modest ranch in Montana. my current dream is start a windfarm and to then rent the land to ranchers for grazing.

E - Eye Color: err…hazel? let me go check my license...

F - Favorite Food(s): sushi, all things soy, Guinness (liquid bread) and ice cream…preferably all in one meal (ever had red bean ice cream at a Japanese restaurant? to die.)

G - Games: i'm a big fan of scrabble, trivial pursuit, and cranium, although i have a tendency to get a liiiiiitle competitive. i'd also like to play me some petanque and croquet this summer, but the bestest summer game ever is Kadima (aka beach tennis). here's to hoping The Mister's knee gets improves after his operation so we can be serving them up at VaBeach real soon!

H - Habit(s): knuckle grinding, teeth popping...oh, wait...

I - Interests: yoga, running (when it's not hot as blazes), thrift store shopping, bargain hunting, and possibly crafting.

J - Job: i somehow managed to scam this sweet telecommuting job for a media research and publishing company. how that happened, i can't exactly say.

K - Kitchen (Wonder or Blunder?): if I make sure i have all the ingredients before beginning the task at hand (and you don't ask me to cook with meat), i can hold my own.

L - Languages: english, some french, and the supersonic conversational language spoken by my family that is nearly undecipherable (and sometimes exhausting) to outsiders.

M - Most Valued Possession(s) (an item, not people/pets): i should say our wedding negatives (as i've yet to put our album together) but there's really nothing material in this world that i can't live without.

N - Name (Named after?): brigita, as in "how do you solve a problem like brigita...?"

O - Outfit You Love: aka "what i'm wearing now"—that would have to be my knee-length denim skirt with tank tops. otherwise, i'd have to say my dark rinse jeans and the black tank top i got for a song at TJ's and have probably worn over 100 times. black doesn't go over so well in the south in the summertime.

P - Pizza Toppings: anything, really, but best of all is that garlic butter bucket from Papa John's. soooo unhealthy...

Q - Question Asked To You the Most: “Where’s [The Mister]?”

R - Relationship/Partner: haven't we covered this already?

S - Sport: (Playing): soccer most recently, but I also enjoy a light-hearted round of tennis and I used to be quite the brute on the XX gridiron…

T - Television Show(s): Buffy, Buffy in syndication on FX, and hopefully Buffy on DVD some day soon. Also Six Feet Under, The Osbournes, and The Real World (the first step is admitting you have a problem…)

U - Unsavory characteristic(s): i’m hyper-critical of myself and everything around me, i’m both a perfectionist and a slacker (go figure that one out), and i’m a picker (ie I pick my cuticles and sometimes pick my nasty-smelling feet). yeesh—aren’t i a catch?

V - Video (Favorites): Rushmore—'tis a pity Jason Schwartzman had to go through puberty...

W - Webpage (Favorite—not your own): as i'm sure their logs can attest, i visit Metafilter, web-goddess, and geek mystique several times a day.

X - Xylophone (or other Instrument?): i took five years of piano lessons and only have the right-hand parts of Axel F and Für Elise to show for it.

Y - Year Born: 1974—Year of the Crouching Tiger that Fell off the Wagon

Z - Zodiac Sign: the few, the proud, the Leos.

well, there went half an hour! ;)
subbacultcha: after being encouraged by a close friend years ago to see the movie Antonia's Line, i finally got around to renting it, and thank goodness i did.

this dutch film is a genuinely refreshing take on three generations independent women and the way in which Antonia's unconventional take on life, love, and relationships transforms a small post-WWII village. men are not the underdogs in this movie, but they aren't the driving force of its story line, either.

if you're looking for a cinematic pick-me-up seasoned with a few tearful scenes and you don't mind "reading" movies (as The Mister often laments), i highly recommend checking out this fantastic flick. don't worry if your town is lacking an independent video rental store—i found my copy at that big national chain that will go unmentioned (and only got it there since i had a coupon for a free rental...).
the perks of marrying a wise@$$: kris noticed that i'm semi-famous for spouting some of The Mister's trademarked wisdom.

being quoted by strangers has totally made my day—does that make me a total loser or just a wannabe internet celebrity?

i still wanna know who this girl is...

6.11.2002

no kidding i need a hobby: worm bin or brew kit—which should i choose for back balcony fun?
futurama: word on the high seas is that we're going to stay put for another two and a half years or so. my emotions about this reality are so mixed that they effectively cancel each other out, leaving me feeling nothing at all.

i guess there's something to be said for remaining in the same place for more than a year, something i haven't done since i left home for college in the fall of 1992. i know families in the same business as the mister tend to move around a lot, but i doubt they can beat my having lived in eight different domiciles in six years.

the upside is that we won't have to deal with all the stress of moving for another few years, the downside is that i should probably conceed defeat and trade in my CA driver's license for a more current one (both state and name-wise). i should probably also take the time to touch-up some of the skips and dings from when i painted the office and bathroom.
wooHOO! i'm a monkey!

i try as you might, i'll never acquire a taste for gin, no matter how cool a gimlet sounds. mighty girl is hip to the fact that there exists a girly drink with a manly name, namely the Greyhound:
Ingredients: Vodka and grapefruit juice (A salted rim makes it a Salty Dog.)

What it says: Having tried everything else, this is the only thing I drink. I have the number of a good tailor in my wallet.

Ideal setting: Over brunch
i think The Mister actually does have the number of a good tailor in his wallet. thing is, the tailor is in Thailand.

the great gift debate: after many months of browsing the web for this poster of a vintage french advertisement, i've finally found it in a multitude of sizes at a decent price (the larger prints notoriously run as high as $300) and for 30% off.

The Mister is a particular fan of mermaids (you know, that whole sailor/tattoo thing), his birthday is coming up and we actually have a [relatively uninteresting] story that goes along with this print...

ok, so real quick—we went into a bar in SF and looked up to see it on the ceiling. he didn't propose or anything, but we did have a pretty good time that weekend with an old HS friend of mine who never responded to our wedding invitation, but anyways...

so the debate is do i spend an arm and a leg on something i know i going to cost just as much to have framed? if so, should i get the "huge" (49" x 36" for $150) or "giant" (60" x 44" for $180) version?
above and beyond the call of phooey: i received a letter from the gas company today stating that they were unable to access my meter and asked me to report the reading to them. funny, they haven't had much trouble reading the meter the last seven months we've been in residence. sorry, but if i'm having trouble getting my own work done, fat chance of me doing a favor for the utility company.
caffeine, work your magic! who ever stole my motivation, would you kindly return it? no questions asked.
hardly.
You are Cameron Diaz!

You acted in cool movies like Charlie's Angels, Vanilla Sky, Being John Malkovich, Very Bad Things, Life Less Ordinary and There's Something About Mary.

one of those days: first i go to unload the dishwasher from last night's dinner party to find that a tupperware lid (a size i have in short supply) had slipped from the rack and melted all over the heating element (which smelled great), and then i get an e-mail saying that The Mister will be returning from his business trip next friday as opposed to [the originally scheduled] this friday.

and it's hot. :(
