RedOrbit says "RedHot!"

"I've got so many people to thank, I don't know where to begin..."

Just received word that I was chosen as one of RedOrbit's Red Hot Blogs of the Day, which—once the initial flattery wore off—made me ask (1) Who is RedOrbit? and (b) Just what post motivated them to pick me?

RedOrbit appears to be a science-related site and it appears like they picked me on account of my crazy committment to taking my dog to an animal psychic. I don't get it, either, but I'm not one to look a gift nod in the mouth. Or something.

I mean, they've picked more established, A-listy blogs like Treehugger and Oddjack in the past, so I'm very flattered (and surprised) to be counted among them.

So thanks, guys! Pree-she-ate-cha.

Call me now!

"Animal communicator" is like saying Miss Cleo made pleasant dinner conversation: OMG, I am totally 20/20 kicking myself for having missed out on an opportunity to drag our Miss Cleo before an honest to goodness animal psychic.

I have honestly been illogically dreaming of the chance to throw a few hard earned bucks at the possibility of someone using their brain waves to get into our devil dog's head and poke around a bit.

Fortunately, this service is being offered again on 10/1, so I'll have my chance to lie to The Mister about what kind of errand I need to run with the dog in tow.

Movies movies movies

Pop quiz, hot shot: So, I've had these two movie quotes in my head for a while and couldn't for the life of me remember where they were from. I broke down and Googled them, but can you recall without using the Almighty Search Engine?
  • "I hate you and your ASS FACE!*"
  • "I'm quietly judging you."
*Note that the first one isn't word-for-IMDb, but that was how I remembered it.

Game on!

Weather or not

WTF, weather edition: The last time I sat down at a computer (~3p), my ForecastFox said that I could look forward to five days of rain, in various forms. Now it's telling me that, with the exception of a thunderstorm tomorrow, it's clear sailing until at least Thursday.

I'm not complaining, but I'm also not exactly banking on it as weather forecasting is obviously one of those oxymoronic "inexact sciences." FF could very well tell me to expect frog-filled cyclones and brimstone showers a few hours again from now...and I'm not just saying that because the Leader of the Free World™ believes in the rapture.

That might be the best thing I've seen on the Internerd in forEVS.

UnPill

The UnPill: Some call them highdeas, but I came up with it while commuting via bike, and if riding my bike gets me "high," I should really go bury my head in the sand from embarassment...

But *any*how, I was thinking how great it would be if the pharmaceutical industrial complex came up with a monthly pill (or patch or whatev) that women could use to regulate/lighten/shorten their cycles (decrease cramps, etc) without impeding fertility.

It would make ovulation a ton more predictable (not to mention the cycle itself) and the overall monthly obligation much less of a hassle.

Alright smart people—get on it.

Muck Fishigan

Congrats, Dad: I was never comfortable with that #2 ranking, anyhow.

Prius-on

I'm a sucker for a relatable script with a good soundtrack: Looks like the latest Zach Braff theatrical, The Last Kiss, is going to put our new town on the cinematographic map! I'll probably go see it (and like it) despite the inevitable hipster backlash, alĂ  Garden State.

Note: Love that the protagonist is a Prius owner. Those things breed like [non-VW] rabbits here in Madison.

ETA: Speaking of the big screen, I really, really want to go see Dark Water Rising but know that even a warehouse-sized box of kleenex would not be enough to keep my emotions from sloshing all over my fellow theatergoers.

Seriously, if I ever find myself having to cry on command, thinking back on those pictures of emaciated dogs on flooded rooftops will more than do the trick.

They said yes

We always knew those crazy kids would make it work: Many congrats to psorr and Tricia for tying the knot in a very fancy fashion this past weekend!

Their nuptials and reception (as well as guest lodging) were held at the super classy Stratford Hall Plantation (aka birthplace of Robert E. Lee) in the Northern Neck region of Virginia.

The ceremony was a refereshing barely-religious affair as opposed to the lock-step Catholic retreads of which I am accustomed and it was outside, which was also not so par for the course for this once upon a papist.

The bride was beautiful, the groom relaxed and genial, the setting beyond lovely—everyone had a fantastic time. But let's back up a bit.

Many thanks to MMM, and especially his kickass GF, A. Clo—who is proof positive that reconstitutible fantastic friends actually exist in nature—for their patience and compassion during my paralytic (and reverse-parastoltic) bout of...let's just say "bad choices." You guys rule [Brent drools].

Fingers crossed that I didn't break any chromosomes Friday night...

Still need kleenex for these things

Weekend forecast: Heading back to the Commonwealth (no not that one, that one) to celebrate with some old friends and fellow bloggers as they get their matrimony on.

The probability of me getting caught up on stats on the flights there and back? Slim to none, but I'm going to try nonetheless.

Overheardseen

Sincerest form of flattery: To steal a page from the Colbert Report page book...

News item: On my way home from campus [for the second time] today, I saw a sign hanging at a crosswalk of a busy section that read "Relaxing Foot Massage—FREE For Woman" [sic] with a few of the tear-off phone numbers at the bottom torn.

All you need to know: There are some coeds out there (and specifically here in Madison) that either don't get that some guys are getting more out of the foot massage than they are or just don't care.

Petarded yet again

"Petard" means ego right?* So, I was still feeling smug for being the first to correctly guess that the TA leading our stats discussion was Vietnamese when I answered three questions pertaining to significant figures incorrectly, pretty much all in a row, blowing one in a particularly spectacular fashion when the prof posed it to me "to redeem myself." Thanks for putting my ignorance under a microscope there, guy.

*I know it doesn't.

[Blank] In My Drain

Vermin update: aka Motherf*ckin' Mice In My Motherf*ckin' Drain.

The little bastard is the rodent version of a suicide terrorist—I'm pretty sure it upped and died of fright right there in my drain, beneath the lattice that, if it weren't broken, would have kept him out of my sink in the first place.

Anyone with extracting-dead-mice-from-drain expertise is encouraged to leave advice in the comments.

TGF steel wool

It rhymes with "house" which is where he is currently, the little bastard: You know the weather is turning when all manner of vermin start appearing within the confines of your home.

The inaugural mouse of the 2006 fall season turned up in the laundry sink in the basement just now (and yes, I screamed, but not because of the mouse because, sh!t, who's prepared to see creepy crawlies at that hour?) and appeares to have gotten himself wedged in the drain from whence he came.

I swear to God, that mouse had better figure out a way to retrace his steps because if he up and dies in my pipes, all of mousekind will feel my not-sanctioned-by-PETA wrath*.

*Oh, who am I kidding. "Wrath" will either mean jerry-rigged humane traps, or at the very worst, getting The Mister to do my wetwork.

Nine eleven

Tired. I don't know if it's the sprinting by bike back and forth to campus through the rain, getting used to a completely different kind of timetable (after five years essentially without one), giving blood on Thursday, or all of the above but I am still wandering around in a trance these days.

That said, it only makes me all the more exhausted to think back on that gorgeous yet horrible day five years ago, much less how our government has used it to justify their misguided actions...

But again, I'm too tired to even start that argument. Long story short, keep giving blood and try to remember to treat everyone as if they were your neighbor, just without the whole leaving flaming bags of poop on their doorstep part.

School daze

I broke my hip hipness: Today was my first full day of classes (only have stats TH, so yesterday didn't count) and holy ESS am I tired.

First class kicked off at 8:50a, last one lets out at 5:30p, mix in two round trips via bike to campus (@ 6 miles each), bake at a toasty 80°, and you've got one wiped brigita. Lather, rinse, repeat on Fridays.

Lessons learned:
  • Between the two lectures I'm a TA for, there are about a ka-BILLION undergrads.
  • I can bust a mean sweat just getting to campus, meaning I am now that gross, weird, slightly befuddled (and let's not forget OLD) grad student with the bike helmet in hand and chalk dust all over their pants (yes, they're still using chalkboards here)
  • I am apparently supposed to be able to instinctually intuit the university email system, despite their running an OS I've never seen before.
  • While I think I might have to bite the spendy bullet and buy my texts at the uni bookstore, I am going to save my receipts in the hopes of being able to deduct education expenses.
Did I mention I'm old? As in planning eight months out for the IRS ooooooooooooooooooooooold.

Speaking of, here's Tricia's brilliant Top Ten Signs You're An Older Student list, in case you missed it the first time.

Gotta run--I'm late for my Geritol.

Battle in Seattle

They're making a movie about what now? Apparently Ms. Flux herself will be starring in Battle in Seattle, a movie about the 1999 WTO riots.

Really? The WTO riots are worthy of the Hollywood treatment? I just hope they give the guy that got kicked in the balls by a riot cop* a speaking role.

Spent 30+ min looking for a picture, couldn't find a one.
